Plain text enclosed in quotes evaluates to <emph>0</emph>, but if you enter a mixed string like <emph>"123a456"</emph>, the conversion stops at the first non-numeric character—resulting in the number <emph>123</emph>.

When you insert a <emph>Set Variable</emph> field into the document for the first time, you need to define its format in the <emph>Format</emph> area. The format can be either text or numeric, with various number formats available. Once defined, you cannot change the format unless you <link href="text/swriter/01/04090005.xhp#delete">remove the variable</link> from the document. By default, all variables are created of numeric format.
